A bathroom remodel is a small room with every trade in it. Framing, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile, and finish carpentry stack inside a few square feet, and the waterproofing that decides whether the room lasts is buried where nobody will ever see it. The visible choices — tile, vanity, fixtures — come after the layout and the shower type are settled.

What the work involves

  • Demolition down to studs and subfloor wherever the shower or tub is changing
  • Layout changes: moving a shower wall, converting a tub to a walk-in shower, relocating the toilet or vanity
  • Shower pan and wall waterproofing, sloped to the drain before any tile is set
  • Tile: floor, shower walls, curb, and the niche and bench when the design has them
  • Vanity, counter, undermount or vessel sink, and faucet installation
  • Exhaust ventilation, recessed lighting, sconces, and protected receptacles
  • Glass shower door or panel, set after tile and grout
  • Casing, base, paint, and accessory mounting into blocking

Questions

What does a bathroom remodel cost?
It depends on whether the layout moves, whether the shower is rebuilt or refinished, and what the tile and fixtures are. Every project is priced from its own scope: a free estimate first; if interests align, a free final estimate and contract are sent.
Can a tub be replaced with a walk-in shower?
Usually. The tub and surround come out, the drain is reworked for a shower drain, the opening is reframed, and the floor is prepared for a sloped pan. Whether it works in a given bathroom depends on the framing, the drain location, and the joists below.
What is a niche, and is one needed?
A niche is a recessed shelf tiled into the shower wall, framed between studs before the waterproofing goes on. It replaces the corner caddy. It has to be planned before the wall closes up, because it cannot be added once the shower is tiled.
Should the shower have a bench?
A bench is framed and waterproofed with the rest of the shower, and it takes floor area from the shower footprint. It belongs in the layout conversation, not after it. Small showers often do better with a corner seat or a fold-down seat than a full bench.
