Masonry & Stone (coordinated)
The mason Riley uses, for stone and brick veneer, fireplace surrounds, chimney repair, paver patios and retaining walls.
Coordinated through Riley's trusted tradesPerformed by the mason from Riley's network under his schedule and the project's permit.
Stone veneer on a fireplace or a front elevation, a brick or stone accent on a new build, a chimney that needs tuckpointing and a new crown, a paver patio, a block or stone retaining wall — masonry on a Frasch Construction project is performed by the mason Riley uses, under the project's permit and his schedule. He plans the flashing, the weeps and the substrate with the trades around them, and you deal with one person.
What the work involves
- Adhered stone veneer over two layers of water-resistive barrier, lath and a scratch coat, with a weep screed held clear of grade
- Full-bed brick and stone veneer with an air space, wall ties and weeps so the wall drains, flashed at every window, door and roofline
- Fireplace surrounds and hearths in stone or brick, laid to the clearances the fireplace unit and the code require
- Chimney tuckpointing, crown rebuilds, caps and flashing, coordinated with the roofer when a roof is being done
- Paver patios and walks on a compacted base with edge restraint, and segmental retaining walls with drainage behind them
Questions
- Does Riley do masonry himself?
- No. Masonry and stone work is performed by the mason he uses, under the project's permit and his schedule. He readies the substrate, the flashing and the sequence with the carpentry and roofing around it, and the stone goes on only after the wall behind it is built to shed water.
- Can stone veneer go straight onto my siding or drywall?
- No. Outside, it goes over a water-resistive barrier, lath and a scratch coat with flashing and a weep screed, because stone is not waterproof and the wall behind it has to drain. Inside, a fireplace surround goes over a substrate rated for it, at the clearances the fireplace unit lists.
- Is chimney rebuilding in scope?
- Tuckpointing, a new crown, a cap and the flashing are, coordinated with the roofer when the roof is being done. A full rebuild of a deteriorated chimney or historic brick restoration is specialty work and is named as such, with a pointer to the people who do it every day.
