Concrete & Flatwork (coordinated)

The concrete crew Riley uses, for footings, slabs, driveways, patios, stoops and garage floors, on his schedule.

Also called flatwork or cement work.

Coordinated through Riley's trusted tradesPerformed by the concrete crew from Riley's network under his schedule and the project's permit.

Footings and foundation work for an addition, a garage slab, a basement floor cut and patched for a new bathroom, a driveway, a patio, a front stoop that has heaved — all of it is performed by the concrete crew Riley uses, under the project's permit and his schedule. He sets the grades and the sequence so the concrete is ready when the framing needs it, and you deal with one person.

What the work involves

  • Footings dug below Minnesota's frost line, 42 inches in the metro, and inspected before the pour
  • Slabs on a compacted granular base, with a vapor retarder where an interior floor needs one, cut with control joints on a layout
  • Air-entrained exterior mixes for driveways, patios, sidewalks and stoops so freeze-thaw and deicers do not spall them
  • Basement floors cut and patched for new drains, egress window wells, and the radon rough-in a new slab needs
  • Pitch, drainage and the finish (broom, trowel, exposed aggregate) decided before the truck arrives

Questions

Does Riley do concrete work himself?
No. Concrete is performed by the concrete crew he uses, under the project's permit and his schedule. He sets the grades, the forms' relationship to the framing that follows and the sequence, and the footing inspection happens before anything is poured.
Why did my stoop or sidewalk heave?
Frost. Water in the soil under a slab freezes and lifts it; a stoop poured on a shallow base moves every winter while the house on deep footings does not. The fix is a footing below the frost line or a free-draining base that does not hold water, and the crew builds to whichever the situation calls for.
When can concrete be poured in Minnesota?
From when the ground has thawed to when it freezes again, roughly spring through fall, with blankets and cold-weather practice at either end. Frozen subgrade and fresh concrete do not mix, so a fall pour is scheduled against the forecast rather than the calendar.
